Lighting candles

In my weeks in Europe last year and this, I have visited a lot of churches and in many of them, I have lit a votive candle. Although I am not a Catholic, I was raised in the Catholic Church and I know that votive candles are lit in front of statues or altars as a symbol of a prayer said or a wish for an outcome for oneself or a loved one. So I  light candles – for the prayers of my Catholic family members, to hold in my heart for a moment my brother’s sick dog, to let my niece, her husband and their new baby know I am thinking of them, for a family member in end-stage of cancer, to remember my uncle who died recently. They burn as a symbol of my love and thoughts.
